Bethany University Teach-Out and Closure
Since March 21, 2011, Bethany University has been in close communication with the office of the Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges & Universities of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges about immediate financial challenges. On June 13, 2011, Bethany University informed WASC that it planned to cease operations at the conclusion of the summer session on August 12, 2011. On June 24, 2011, the Commission voted to accept Bethany's request to withdraw accreditation on August 12, 2011 when the summer session ends.
Bethany administration has been working closely with WASC to create an orderly teach-out plan and closure. This plan and related agreements with other colleges have been approved by the Commission as of August 16, 2011. This plan includes agreements to provide for the fair and equitable treatment of all current students by offering them smooth pathways to complete their degrees at other regionally accredited institutions that offer comparable academic programs, in keeping with WASC policy and federal regulations. Arrangements also cover the housing of all past and current student records.
Olivet University, a faith based institution in San Francisco, California, sponsored by the Evangelical Assembly of Presbyterian Churches, has reached agreement to purchase the Bethany University campus in Scotts Valley including rights to use the name of Bethany University and its web site. Olivet University is NOT accredited by WASC but is accredited by the Association for Biblical Higher Education. They have agreed to post on the former Bethany University web site until August 31, 2013 the teach out agreement with WASC. The Memoranda of Understandings (MOU) with each institution developed as part of this teach out agreement developed by Bethany are listed below.
