September 22-23, 2011
Renaissance Hotel
Long Beach, California

This retreat-style workshop is designed to support WASC campuses in the early stages of implementing learning outcomes assessment. Led by facilitators Mary Allen and Amy Driscoll the workshop has been redesigned to emphasize problem solving, troubleshooting, and responses to questions typical of institutions just getting started in assessment.

Blending formal presentations with interactive exercises, consultations, and plenty of team time, this workshop will guide participants through a sequence of assessment-related topics and tasks that will familiarize them with basic principles of good assessment. Workshop activities are equally appropriate for general education, liberal arts majors, and professional programs.

Topics include:

  • Formulating student learning outcomes
  • Mapping the curriculum
  • Using technology
  • Choosing assessment methods
  • Developing and applying rubrics
  • Assessing with e-portfolios
  • Planning for assessment

In addition to attending sessions, teams will work on a project they define to suit a campus or program need. Teams will attend a variety of plenary and break-out sessions where they can gather information and share experiences with other campuses. Break-out sessions will be highly interactive and focus on application of new learning to the team project. Teams will also receive one-on-one mentoring, get peer feedback on their own work, and - best of all - they'll return home with an implementation plan for their project.

After registering, teams will be asked to submit a brief project description. The project will help teams to get the most benefit from the retreat -- and help mentors to facilitate each team’s progress. The earlier we hear from you, the better mentors can prepare, so don’t delay.

WASC Assessment workshops are specifically designed for institutional teams made up of two or more persons. We will accept individuals, but they should understand that sending a team will provide the greatest benefit.

The Renaissance Long Beach is offering WASC workshop participants a discounted room rate of $129.00/night, plus tax occupancy fee. Participants are responsible for their own hotel reservations. To reserve rooms, contact the hotel directly at 1-800-MARRIOTT.
