Teaching and Assessing the English Major

February 26-27, 2009 - Long Beach, CA

In this two-day interactive workshop led by facilitator Mimi Czarnik, teams of English faculty will develop their expertise in assessment and then work on ways they can use assessment as a tool to address a current challenge in their department. This challenge may be related to the English curriculum, to pedagogies and assessment methods that enhance student learning in the English major, to external demands (from graduate schools, employers, accreditation bodies, departments of education, the government), or to questions about size and structure of the English program.

This workshop offers valuable information and  appropiate mentoring for ALL English departments, from those at large research-oriented universities to smaller private and church-affiliated institutions. It is best suited to departments in the early stages of assessment, but others will find it useful as a way to bring new faculty on board, address a persistent problem, or just gather new ideas.

Teams will move through guided work on exploring English as a framework for student learning; creating assessments that enhance student learning; using electronic and other portfolios; teaching students to be more analytical readers; and addressing the issue of coverage in the English major.

Specific Topics to Be Addressed Include:

  • English as a Framework for Student Learning
  • Designing Assessments That Enhance Student and Faculty Learning
  • Using Electronic Portfolios in the English Major
  • Teaching Analysis to People Who Like to Read
  • Coverage Versus Competence in the English Major
  • Using Outcomes to Create Curriculum Coherence
