Beyond the Meltdown: Finances, Structures, and the Future of Higher Education - Workshop for Presidents and Trustees

Mills College, Oakland, CA
December 2, 2009

Claremont University Consortium, Claremont, CA
December 3, 2009

For public and private institutions alike, the current economic turmoil will not be short-lived. Over the coming decade, real dollars for education are likely to decrease even as challenging demographic and economic trends continue. At the same time, the need for an educated workforce and a responsible citizenry will grow. Short-term measures to balance budgets will be necessary but not sufficient. In this workshop we will think creatively about core issues that - at least according to the traditional view of higher educational - appear to be in tension: enhancing financial viability, and improving educational effectiveness. Participants will return to campus with both concrete take-aways for saving money now and more visionary ideas for the coming decade.

Featured speakers:

Jim Doti, President, Chapman University, on econometric and demographic trends in the region and their implications for institutions

Alan Guskin, President emeritus, Antioch University, on reforming versus transforming our institutions
