WASC ARC 2008

The Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities' Annual Meeting offers educators an opportunity to hear cutting edge educational research, dialogue with regional counterparts on best practices, and network with other professionals. The program is designed to support the work of the whole campus community, from administrators and faculty to student affairs personnel, institutional researchers, librarians, and professional staff in many capacities. As an attendee from the 2007 conference put it, “this is THE event of the year” for postsecondary educators in the west.

ARC History

WASC’s Annual Meeting, held since 1924, is now known as the Academic Resource Conference, or ARC. The WASC ARC offers everything from hands-on workshops and campus examples to keynotes that put the higher education enterprise into a larger social and economic context. Now in its 84 th year, the conference provides an opportunity for the most diverse and influential group of higher educations professionals in the western region (1) to participate in educational workshops and programs, (2) discuss current issues and (3) share best practices.

2008 Theme - Illuminating Learning, Accrediting Quality

Never in living memory has the demand for US higher education been higher, and never have the voices of critics been louder. Breakthroughs in brain research, advances in pedagogy, and new assessment methods have moved us down the road toward greater learning-centeredness. At the same time, institutions are under intense pressure to lower costs, increase retention and graduation rates, and improve the quality of students’ learning. Amid all these crosscurrents, it makes sense for us as a regional community to step back and ask some simple but profound questions.

* What is educational quality?
* How do we achieve quality and how do we document it.
* What is the learning we most want our students to gain?
* How can we best communicate with our many audiences?

The resources and services sponsors and exhibitors will offer will be of keen interest to attendees as they grapple with the questions that will frame our conversation at the 2008 WASC ARC.
