The Changing Faculty: Exploring and Creating New Faculty Models for Student Success & Institutional Effectiveness

While full-time tenured and tenure-track faculty were once the norm in American higher education, more than two-thirds of the American professoriate now work on contingent contracts. This fundamental shift in the academic workforce raises critical questions not only for faculty, but for the public, students, quality assurance agencies, and the institutions themselves. This shift also raises a set of questions and concerns for academic leadership, including:

  • What is the landscape of the changing faculty and the implications for and impact on our institutions and our students?
  • What are some solutions to the real challenges we face with today’s academic workforce model, such as the economic realities, organizational risks and legal issues, effects on curricular and programmatic quality, and impact on student learning?
  • How can we think differently about faculty in the future to ensure high-quality educational experiences for our students and sustainability for our institutions?
  • What are other possibilities for the faculty of the future (including their roles, contracts, support mechanisms, etc.)?
  • What can WSCUC’s institutions do now – and in the future – to envision and create new models that assure student success and institutional effectiveness? How might WSCUC institutions begin to lead effective changes?
  • How can academic leaders at colleges and universities promote and facilitate such organizational changes, accordingly? What structures, skills, and resources need to be employed to enact effective change?

This interactive, active learning workshop will focus on examining new and emerging models of faculty employment and engagement and addressing the above questions, and more. Join us for this important learning opportunity about these and other issues, exploring research findings, case studies, success strategies, and future faculty models.

Facilitator:

Dr. Adrianna Kezar, Co-Director and Principle Investigator the Delphi Project, Professor of Higher Education at the University of Southern California’s Rossier School of Education, and WSCUC Commissioner. Dr. Kezar is a national expert in the areas of change, governance, and leadership in higher education; her research agenda explores the change process in higher education institutions and the role of leadership in creating change.

Intended Audience:  This workshop is designed for academic leadership -- including CAOs, VPAAs, provosts, deans, and faculty. Institutional academic leadership teams are strongly encouraged to attend as a team to get the most out of the activities. However, individuals are more than welcome to come on their own and will be fully engaged as well.

Lodging:  Participants are responsible for their own hotel reservations. Kellogg West Conference Center and Lodge, located on the Cal Poly Pomona campus, is offering WSCUC workshop participants a discounted room rate of $100.00 Single $105.00 Double/night plus occupancy tax. Registration: Registration fee includes lunch. Beverages and snacks will be available during breaks. Attendees will be on their own for all other meals.

Registration fees:  $290/per team member. After the registration deadline, if space is available, the late registration fee will be $350 /per team member.

Discount for Combined Registration: The Building a Culture of Quality: A Retreat for Institutional Leaders will be offered on January 17 at Kellogg West Conference Center. The special rate for a combined registration for The Changing Faculty and the Retreat on Building a Culture of Quality is $500 until 1/6/2017. After the registration deadline, if space is available, the late registration fee will be $560 /per team member.

This educational program has been developed by national and regional experts and is offered as a service to WSCUC member institutions and others who wish to learn about good practices applicable to all institutions. It is entirely optional, and our hope is that member institutions will find it helpful. WSCUC staff will be present to answer questions related specifically to accreditation expectations.
